A juicy piece of cold watermelon on a hot summer day might just be the most refreshing appetizer ever! Now, you have definitely heard of seedless watermelon, and probably even of square watermelon, but what about a heart-shaped watermelon? The lovely new red and green melon shaped fruit was “designed” by Mr and Mrs. Hiroichi Kimura of Kyushu, Japan over a three-year-long process.
So how much are these heart-shaped fruits selling for? Love isn’t cheap, in fact, the watermelons are selling for a hefty sum of 15,750 yen (which comes out to about $160). Apparently, the fairly expensive cost is due to the fact that only 20 melons were grown this crop season, but, not to worry, the Kimura’s have plans to grow a larger batch for this coming year.
I’m assuming that square watermelon are grown in pretty much the same manner as heart-shaped watermelons, so if you’re interested in growing your own this link might just be where you want to start looking. Enjoy!
