Okay, so originally I was trying to find GameInformer’s top 200 games of all time list that they just published to commemorate their 200th issue, when I stumbled upon an article that seemed like a misplaced article from The Onion. After delving further into the depths of the internet I’ve discovered that what I was reading actually took place, and knew I had to share this flabbergasting event.
A Japanese man, who prefers to be known as SAL 9000, recently wedded his virtual girlfriend Nene Anegasaki, a character for the Nintendo DS dating sim LovePlus. Now don’t think this was a rush-to-the-courthouse-because-they’re-recklessly-in-love kind of situation. There was a small ceremony at the Tokyo Institute of Technology with a live audience, an emcee, a priest, and speeches from the best man and bridesmaid (who is also a virtual character).

Now if you’re utterly baffled by how SAL 9000 can develop such a deep relationship with a virtual girlfriend, think about Maxim’s game “The Sims.” The entire game is about building relationships (specifically with a significant other). The new line of Nintendo DS systems have a built in microphone so you can literally talk to the virtual character and interact with them via dual touch screens. Ah yes, you can have your girlfriend/boyfriend in the palm of your hand… literally.
While dating sims might not be that well known in the United States, they’re on a whole different level over in Japan seeing as SAL 9000 says he’s had plenty of other anime girlfriends before dear Nene. I’m sure this isn’t to be taken too serious, but with the full ceremony I’m beginning to wonder. Too bad Nene wasn’t able to taste her own wedding cake.
